The palace was named after Maharaja Umaid Singh. However, his grandson Gaj Singh is the current owner of this place.
The palace has 347 rooms, and the former royal family from Jodhpur used to stay there. A section of the palace is a museum.
You will notice the museum to have some rare collections such as stuffed leopards, lighthouse shapes, and vintage cars used by the Maharajas.
The most important in the museum is a flag. It was a gift Maharaja Jaswant Singh received from queen Victoria in the year 1877.

Jaisalmer Fort
It is the second oldest fortress in the state and was constructed by Rajput Rawal Jaisal in 1156 AD.
Built on a hill that is 75 m above the ground, the base has 4.5 m tall walls protecting the fort. The fort has four gates, and in addition, one of them was protected by a cannon.
Some of the important palaces to see inside the fort:
Firstly, the Raj Mahal Palace, which was the residence of Maharawal of Jaisalmer.
Secondly, 7 Jain temples inside the fort were built from yellow sandstone. In total, the temples have 600 idols.
Thirdly, the Laxminath temple was built to worship the Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu.
Lastly, there are a lot of Merchant Havelis. You will notice all of them are made of yellow sandstone.
But two of the most prominent Havelis are the Vyas Haveli made in the 15th century and Shree Nath Palace, which used to be the home of the Prime Minister of Jaisalmer.
Bada Bagh
Situated 6 km north of Jaisalmer, the garden complex was built by the Maharajas from the 18th to 20th century.
Jai Singh II, a successor of Maharawal Jaisal Singh, built a dam due to water scarcity in this place.
After the death of Jai Singh II, Lunkaran, his son, constructed a lake and memorial chhatri monument on the hill. The monument oversees the temple making it a great spot for people to visit.
Lunkaran built a lot more monuments in this area. Maharawal Jawahir Singh’s chhatri was the last one. But it remained unfinished even after the Independence.
Gadsisar Lake
This man-made lake was built by the founder of Jaisalmer, Maharaja Rawal Jaisal, in the year 1156 AD. It is about 2 km away from the Jaisalmer Fort.
In the past, the water for the whole city was provided by this lake. But now the water comes from the Indira Gandhi Canal; that’s why the lake never dries up.
